Tranquility for All Tastes
Just 55 miles east of Florida, Grand Bahama is the northernmost island in the Bahamas and the third largest in the archipelago.
Named after the Spanish “Gran Bajamar,” which means “great shallows,” it offers visitors secluded white sand beaches, sprawling luxury hotels, world-class scuba diving, and various water sports.
But the island wasn't always meant to pamper tourists.
As you dust off the over-touristy and industrial edges, you'll find a host of exciting activities in Grand Bahama to stimulate all tastes. Divers can venture through one of the world’s longest underwater cave systems at Lucayan National Park. Meanwhile, nature lovers should check out the stunning Garden of the Groves. It is considered one of the finest tropical gardens in the region with over 10,000 species of flowers, plants, and trees, which attract a wide variety of birds and butterflies. Inside, you will find a Labyrinth, which is a replica of the original Chartres Labyrinth found in the Medieval Cathedral of Notre Dame de Chartres in France.
Grand Bahama is far less crowded than Nassau, with only 47,500 inhabitants. But despite its small population, the island shares many attributes with the Bahamian capital. For example, Grand Bahama also hosts its own straw market, which features a range of handmade jewelry, straw, and wood crafts. Straw plaiting has been an important industry for Bahamians since the early 1940s, and these markets are an important part of Bahamian culture throughout the islands.
Grand Bahama is still recovering after being hit by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, so foreign investment is most welcome to help with the rebuilding effort. The island is still the second most popular tourist destination in the Bahamas, so real estate investors can benefit from the constant flow of tourists.
